The room was large and tastefully furnished with French doors that opened onto a long gallery that ran the full length of the building. There was carpet on the floor and a big brass double bed with a scarlet coverlet. The French doors were hung with dark blue drapes. There was a long plush sofa with rolled ends, and marble-topped bureau, a dresser, a hand-carved table. Framed engravings decorated the walls. An ornate table lamp with a red globe gave the room a soft, intimate atmosphere.

“Most tasteful,” Benedict said.

“I’m glad you approve, handsome.” Leaning back against the closed door, Kitty Flynn suddenly seemed relaxed. She moved slowly, hips swaying, to where Benedict stood at the end of the big brass bed. “I like to be warm and comfortable. Don’t you like to be warm and comfortable, handsome?”

A frown creased Benedict’s brows. She licked at her lips, leaving them wet and moist. Her teeth were small and even and very white.

“Warm and comfortable, Kitty? What of the danger dangling over my head?”

She lifted a hand and traced a red nail gently down his cheek. “Oh, that ...”

He looked at her searchingly. “Tell me about the nature of this danger, Kitty.”

“Me.”

“What?”

Her hands slid around his slim waist. Her smile had the devil in it. “I lied to you, Duke Benedict. I lied and I’m not ashamed of it. When I saw you talking so cozy with that little Mex downstairs, just like that I was green with jealousy and I said to myself, Kitty, it’s time you and handsome got to know each other better before some little tart with big brown eyes gets in first.” Her fingers massaged his back and her small, sharp pink tongue ran over her lips again. “Are you annoyed, handsome?”

“What would you do if I said I was mad, Kitty?”

Her body was against him now, moving. “Why, I guess I’d have to make it up to you. You got any ideas how I might do that, handsome?”

He kissed her then and she clung to him fiercely. She drew her head back and her eyes were dark with desire. With trembling hands she began to unbutton her blouse, lamplight rosy and soft on her high, round breasts. Suddenly she pulled at the blouse, tearing it off.

“Handsome,” she murmured. Then, raking her nails at his face, she screamed, “Help! Help me, somebody! He’s trying to rape me!”

For a stunned instant, Duke Benedict didn’t move. But he exploded into action as Kitty ran screaming for the door. He beat her to it and pumped a short jab that connected with the point of her chin and spilled her unconscious to the floor.

The corridor outside was full of shouting and running feet. He drove the door bolt home a moment before a heavy shoulder crashed against it. Whirling, he took one last glimpse at the half-naked girl, then pushed open the French windows. He stepped out onto the gallery and saw a burly figure in Rurale gray pounding towards him. The man shouted.
